Final Cut Pro seems to be the way to go for most people. I have been using it since version 1, and really love it. Although Premiere looks like it's well integrated, and they've made great strides in it. It really depends what platform you're on.
I use both Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas Pro. FCP is generally considered the current leader in the class but I use Sony cameras and Vegas Pro generally has early support for new camera formats. I also find its audio support great. Haven't used Premiere Pro much in years but I hear good things about the newest version. For compositing, I'm a big After Effects fan but recently I've been teaching myself Nuke.
